AFTA On Tiles Industry
TILE-MAKERS will have to brace hemselves for more competition once the Asian Free Trade Agreement (AFTA) is implemented, says Kim Hin Industries Bhd's group managing director, John Chua.
AFTA is expected to be enforced in 2005 and will see a liberalised trading environment.
We should accept the coming of AFTA with a more positive attitude instead of being pessimistic about the whole idea, Chua, who is based in Sarawak, told Mail Money.
He added that although the tiles industry will be much affected, there is no reason for players to cringe at the thought of it.
We have to accept the fact that the stronger ones will stay, and as for the weaker ones, they'll need to buckle up or else..., Chua said without elaborating.
Nonetheless, he emphasised that with the coming of Afta, the major players will have to be more cautious and alert as it will be a trying time for everybody in the corporate sector.
Kim Hin, one of the largest tile makers in Malaysia, has a market capitalisation of RM308.2 million.
